The costume brief

Four aims set before a single sketch. The cast had to fight, climb and kneel on a scaffold set, so movement came first.

Move

Every piece cut for stage combat, climbing and kneeling.

Comfort

Layers the cast could wear through long rehearsals under hot lights.

Vision

Bring the director's post-apocalyptic world to life.

Character

Let each costume tell the audience who someone is before they speak.

Lear

Two actors

Two actors share the role, tied together by one fur cape. Underneath, one Lear leans warrior (harness, braids, gold armband) and the other leans worn and earthy (mustard shawl, red scarf, harem joggers).

Goneril

Warrior

Dutch braids, a cross-strapped bodice and a short wrapped warrior skirt. Leather tones and gunmetal, built to fight in.

Regan

Severe

The sharpest silhouette: a long deep-blue coat with a high collar, a corset belt and black leggings.

Cordelia

Light

The softest outline in the play: pale, flowing dresses in two options, with grey leggings underneath so she can still move.

The cast

Tribe

A shared tribe look: layered shirts, harem trousers, scrap-fabric details and dark joggers, with accent colours that separate the groups on stage.

Body paint

Markings

Face and body paint mark each tribe on stage. The blue warpaint carries straight through into the trailer and character teaser.

Pencil designs for Kent, Cordelia, Edgar, Oswald and France, and three costume fittings.

The marketing brief

A photoshoot and poster plan to sell a dark, physical version of Shakespeare, with every image built around Lear's two sides: strength and grief.

Planned location
Lord Line building, St Andrew's Dock

An abandoned dockside building in Hull, picked as a ready-made apocalyptic set. Props kept simple: Lear's shrine, a length of cloth to suggest a sandstorm behind the cast, and sticks as weapons.

Prep

Test before the shoot

A casual trial shoot around campus with both Lears, before costume day, to test angles and decide which lenses and kit to bring on the day.

Concept 1 · Strength

The warrior

A strong, empowering hero portrait of Lear, in the spirit of The Woman King.

Concept 2 · Grief

The shrine

Lear's silhouette praying at the shrine of a loved one, to show the emotional side.

Concept 3 · Duality

Two Lears

A split poster, Spider-Man and Venom style: one strong Lear, one broken.

Concept 4 · Power

The ruler

A bold, single-figure poster that leans into Lear's strength and menace.

Light

Floodlights

With coloured gels for mood.

Shadow

Spotlights

To carve hard shadows across faces.

Atmosphere

Smoke

A smoke machine for depth and haze.

Kit

Lens plan

Chosen after the trial shoot.
